“Landscape minis”

The work on the next page is arranged chronologically, with recent work up top.

The 2023 “Landscape Minis” (at the bottom of the page) are gestural works exploring whimsy, play, humor & irreverence within the landscape genre. In 2024, the “minis” became more intricate. These recent works are a deeper exploration of limited color palettes & textured layers. They were made alongside my “Fleshy Pinks” series.

In general, the “minis” showcase the different avenues that my work can take, and they are an essential part of my overall process. I make these regularly - many more than are shown here - and I only pick the best ones to fully develop.

These always begin with only 3 colors, as a way to explore different color combinations. After the initial exploration, I decide which paintings to keep. As I’m finishing them, I sometimes embrace the challenge of the 3-color palette to the end. Certain paintings are capable of a full range of expression within this constraint. Other times, the painting asks for more, and I expand into a more complex set of colors as I build up the layers.
